Why “Raising Intelligent Kids”?

I chose the title “Raising Intelligent Kids” for my blog because I think it has universal appeal. Let’s start with the word “intelligent”. The first thought many may have is to consider intelligence in the traditional academic sense. Let’s face it, this is important. No matter where a child starts, or what genetic and/or environmental influences may be at play, we all want our children to learn, don’t we? Intelligence could also apply to the term “emotional intelligence” coined by Daniel Goleman. Do we want our children to be altruistic, motivated, and empathetic? “I just want you to be happy”, said by millions of parents throughout the world. Could intelligence encompass common sense or street smarts? Could creativity be considered a type of intelligence? Now let’s look at the word, “raising”. What does this mean to you? Malala Day

When I listen to Malala Yousufzai speak, I am moved to tears every time. Today, July 12th, which has been declared Malala Day by the United Nations on Malala’s 16th birthday, I am particularly moved because instead of revenge, she wishes education for the terrorists who shot her. I try all the time to find enough love for the world just to get through the day without complaining about something. This little girl puts me to shame. How many of us really (and I mean REALLY) stand behind our beliefs. How little does it take to steer us off course? I think about her courage to stand up for what is right, despite the fact that she has truly suffered for it. I think about what I could possibly be scared of and how that could possibly be worse than getting shot in the head. Let’s face it, most days I’m worried about being embarrassed or hurt or whether or not someone likes me. Sounds of the Season

I love this time of year! There’s music in the air! A lot of that music is being made by kids at their winter concerts. What a joy for a parent to see their child display their talents for all to see. I know when I watch my kids play, my heart swells with pride. Playing an instrument is so good for kids. Remembering to take their instrument to school or maintaining a practice log teaches responsibility and organizational skills. Practicing (and practicing!) teaches a child perseverance and the results of hard work. There have even been studies linking playing an instrument to higher mathematical ability and higher IQ scores. I encourage you to get to know your child well and help them to know themselves. As a team find out what your child’s interests and talents are. Help them to hone their talents while they are young and still open to new experiences. Having something they can do well, will increase their self-confidence and may lead to lifelong skills.
